Navigating Rent Deadlines

Navigating Rent Deadlines

Guide for Students - Are you waiting on your maintenance loan to pay rent ?

As a student, managing your finances in a new city, especially Brighton, can be one of the most challenging aspects of your educational journey. This becomes even more complicated when you’re faced with rent deadlines that don’t align with your student loan/maintenance payment schedule. If you’re struggling to meet contractual rent deadlines with private landlords, you’re not alone. Here are some proactive tips to help you navigate this situation effectively.

(crucial) Steps to Take

1. Communicate with Your Landlord / Agent, early
Reach out to your landlord (agent) as soon as you realize there’s an issue. Ideally before the rent is contractually due. Honest communication can go a long way. Explain your situation and see if they are willing to work with you on payment deadlines. Be clear on when your funding is due and from what source, be specific on dates and attach confirmation from your student loan or finance provider if you can.
Suggest a temporary payment arrangement or a revised schedule that aligns with your loan disbursement dates. Share your anticipated income dates and your agent can assist with adjusting your rent schedule and negotiating favourably with your Landlord
If you can, make a ‘good-will’ payment without delay, this is a smaller contribution to the larger payment due. Ensure your guarantor is aware of the issue and even better, your housemates. Your agent can limit un-necessary reminders or notifications which can cause concern, if they aren’t already in the picture

2. Explore Alternative Funding Options
Emergency Funds: Check if your university offers emergency funds or grants for students facing financial challenges. These can provide immediate relief while you wait for your loan.
Your guarantor; Is ultimately liable too so if you cannot / do not take these steps your Landlord is entitled to approach them directly, and your housemates’ guarantors under the jointly and severally liable clause to recover rent due, including interest and charges. If your guarantor is experiencing unforeseen financial issues and unable to assist, include them in your communications so we (your agent) can Fastrack options available before un-necessary escalation

Final Thoughts
Remember, you are not alone in this struggle. Many students face similar challenges, and it’s important to reach out for support when needed. Whether through friends, family, or university services, there are resources available to help you navigate this difficult time.
Stay proactive, stay informed, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Your education is important, and with the right strategies and support, you can successfully manage the financial aspects of being a student.
